LXO Theme of the Month: The Pelvis
🟧If there is one region that creates so much disagreement, debate and emotion in Osteopathy then it is probably the Pelvis!
🟧I think the interesting thing about the pelvis is that although we often think of (and taught) it as a region, it behaves more like a crossroads.
🟧Forces from the legs pass through it, forces from the trunk pass through it and every breath influences it through its relationship with the abdominal cavity and pelvic floor.
🟧This is one of the reasons why we as osteopaths should be careful about viewing pelvic findings in isolation. A pelvic restriction may not begin in the pelvis and a pelvic symptom may not be caused by the pelvis.
🟧As we explore this month's theme, I'd encourage you to think beyond landmarks and techniques and ask yourself:
"What relationships am I seeing?"
Often that is where the most valuable osteopathic findings are found.
Discussion Question:
When you find a pelvic restriction (remeber the SIJ is not the pelvis it is part of the pelvic container), what is the first relationship you start exploring and why?
Do you look towards the lumbar spine, hips, lower limbs, abdominal wall, pelvic floor, respiratory diaphragm or somewhere else entirely?
